Time for a new home

With much regret and yet excitement the Sargent Park Math Zone has moved to a new site. The reasons for leaving are that Blogger in Beta is a much better service. Please continue to use this site to see what happened over my first year of blogging.

Former students I encourage you to continue to use you classroom blogs as a way to communicate with each other and the math blogging community.

I enjoyed it and am looking forward to seeing what will happen this year. Below you will find links to the new Math Class blogs for Sargent Park School. Sargent Park Math Zone This will be the new class hub. Students will find out what they need to do for Blogging assignments and have the ability to be interactive in their learning.

Students will also post to their classroom wiki to create A Grade 8 Math Guidebook. This is a new and exciting opportunity to create a manual of everything that they have learned. The students will include problems and solutions, their scribeposts and growing posts.

The Scribe Post Hall of Fame will be a place to showcase the best class scribes.

The Growing Post Hall of Fame will house the best Growing Posts that the students create.

I also plan to have an interactive wiki textbook this year. It will cover all the topics covered in class and have interacive quizzes and problems. It is my goal to have the students create their own study guides for tests and exams at this wiki. Stay tuned for more news.

Its the End of the Year and You Know It (REM)

As a final post for the season I feel it necessary for all the wonderful visiors from around the world to leave a reflection on a year in blogging and using web 2.0 tools.

Please visit any of the sites and leave comments behind for the students. They do look back periodically and would appreciate any feedback.

I had a home Hub for the students to get information from and 4 rooms of 36 students blogging on their own class sites.

Well it is the end of another school year and a time for reflection and contemplation. The students did well this year and I think the blogging helped. They were active scribe posters for the first part of the year learning how to use the class blog to their advantage.

My best scribers can be found at The Scribe Post Hall of Fame. They are comprable to the work that Darren does at any of his class sites.

They were equally enthusiastic about doing Growing Posts. This took the ideas of a scribe post and made the students participate over a longer period.

I was amazed at the effort and work the students put into their posts. Some included animated gifs and one student started here and finished here.

As the posts progressed I wanted the students to interact with other students Growing Posts. They ended up doing word problems and leaving links back to their favorite student Growing Posts.

The Growing Post is an idea I'll reinvent over the summer and into next year.

Where to Next??

I want to start tagging my blog posts. This is a common practice by The Cool Cat Teacher and Clarence Fisher up in Northern Manitoba on Remote Access.

I have only dabbled in wiki's but see their potential. I am going to start one at the beginning of the year and create an online studyguide and textbook for students. It will combine all the wonderful aspects of scribing and growing posts but be more open to student change and voice.

It is one thing to get the great students to blog and use wiki's almost a form of enrichment for some. Where I stuggled this year was to get the stuggling learner, the student who feels they don't belong into the blogging spirit. This wil be a goal of mine. Go from 50 % online participation to 75%.

Darren uses delicious and social bookmarking well. I introduced it to my students but they did not understand what they were expected to do and it sort of fell apart. I'll do a better job next year.

The Grade 7's had a teacher who also blogged with them last year. It will be easier to get started this year because most of the students understand what they are doing. Since the basics are already known how will we go next year.

The Grade Nines will not have class blogs to my knowledge (unless I can make the horse drink the water after I lead it there!) but will leave the class sites up this year so that they can post, scribe and communicate with each other. There are some awesome students who might be like Darren's and start up a blog site themselves. It will be an interesting time.

As we started this journey down the Growing Post Lane I wondered how many of you would participate. The first round of Growing posts saw just over 50% of you do an online version of the post with 15% of you choosing to do a paper version of the assignment (where where the other 35%?????)

Fraction Growing Post Part 2

In this growing post you will need to demonstrate your understanding of multiplying and dividing fractions.

1. This shape is a square that has side lengths of 5 cm. This shape represents 5/6 of a total. Use this square to show the fraction 9/5. You can use diagrams, words, symbols to show your understanding.(copy the picture into your post and change it as you see fit!!)

Give a brief description of the process you took to create the new diagram.

2. What happens when you multiply fractions? Use both a numerical and pictorial example to show our understanding of this concept.

3. Find a website or blog that shows you how to multiply fractions. Create a link to this fraction site (highlight a word you want to be a link, click the link button, paste your url into the pop up that appears). Be sure to leave a brief 3 sentence description to the site.

4. What happens when you divide fractions? Use both a numerical and pictorial example to show our understanding of this concept.

5. Find a website or blog that shows you how to divide fractions. Create a link to this fraction site (highlight a word you want to be a link, click the link button, paste your url into the pop up that appears). Be sure to leave a brief 3 sentence description to the site.

7. Create a word problem that involves fractions. The word problem should have a picture in it ( a garden with 4 equal parts etc.). Answer someone elses word problem with a link back to the origional question.

Fraction Growing Post

Growing post is going to be a little different that the last one on geometry. The last growing post you were expected to add material to your post on a daily basis. This will remain the same. A difference this time is that you will be expected to participate on other peoples posts by leaving comments. The questions below are just an outline of what is needed in this post. Feel free to add other information about fractions.

Fraction Growing Post Instructions Part 1

1. Use a picture and text to show that you understand what expressing fractions in lowest terms means.

2. How are improper fractions and mixed numbers the same?

3. Find a website or blog that explains how to create equivalent fractions or write fractions in lowest terms. Create a link to it and a brief description of what the site has to offer.

4. a)Write a word problem that involves adding these two fractions with denominators of fourths and thirds and your answer is an improper fraction.
b) Write a word problem that involves subtracting two mixed numbers.

5. Go to three peoples growing posts and answer their fraction problems by leaving comments. One of the three people cannot be from your homeroom!!

6. Find a website or blog that explains how to add or subtract fractions. Create a link to it and a brief description of what the site has to offer.

After the hard work you put into your growing posts you now need to use the blog as a means of studying and getting ready for your final exam. The scribe posts will begin again on Monday. Everyday the scribe will be responsible for explaining what happened in class including diagrams and easy to understand notes. We are going to have a second list starting up. It is called the Research Director. Ms Armstorng at DMCI created this idea.

Here is how Ms Armstrong their teacher describes the job.

"Research Director". That person's job will be to search the net for a great new math site that helps to explain, reinforce, or extend a topic that we have covered in class. The Research Director will post a brief summary of the site, and share it with the class by creating a link.

Since most people prefer to learn from visuals, try looking for videos, diagrams, or java applets that demonstrate a topic really well. Maybe you can find a neat cartoon or powerpoint. You never know what you might find. Don't forget to credit the author of any material that you borrow. Just because it is on the internet, does not make it yours to take. One day someone may borrow intellectual property that you created - wouldn't you want them to at least recognize the efforts that you made???

The grade eight classes will be doing the same thing. With 40 School days left before your exam the time has come to shift gears and get going!! There will be a research director and scribe list posted on sp8mathzone. Work hard and scribe well. This will become a powerful exam study guide. You will be responsible for one scribe and one research directors job before the year is finished. Feel free to add posts or comments at anytime.

Growing Post Instructions

Day 1

1. The first thing you need to have in your Geometry Growing post is a picture of a rectangle. You must have measurements on each of its sides( the drawing does not have to be to scale). Beside the picture of the rectangle you need to have the formula for calculating the area of rectangles.

2. The second thing you need to have in your Geometry Growing post is a picture of a triangle. You must have all the required measurments Required to measure the area of a triangle ( the drawing does not have to be to scale). Beside the picture of the rectangle you need to have the formula for calculating the area of triangles.

3. Answer the following question, What is the relationship between the area of a rectangle and a triangle?

March 15th Second Day

4. Create 2 rectangles and put them together to make a complex figure. Make sure you have side lengths. Calculate out the area of your new figure in 2 different ways. Use colour to illustrate the parts of the complex figure that is being calculated.

March 16 Third Day

5. Show how one can make a rectangle from a parallelogram. What is the area? Leave 3 constructive comments on other peoples growing posts.

In this unit you are going to have a chance to build a growing post. Now the obvious question is What is a growing post? Well I will tell you. The first thing everyone needs to do is create a personal Geometry post. Every day this week you will be given instructions on how to add to your post. You will be given instructions from the sp8mathzone site and there will be a link on each your class sites. Bonus marks will be given for parent or brother or sister participation.

Remember you don't learn if you don't try. You may do the assignments everynight or spend a few more minutes over the weekend to complete the post.

Tomorrow you have a test on Algebra. You need to know all about the "Sammy the Seal" booklet.
Two questions you will have are 7x -2 = 3x +10 and 7x + 4 - 5x = 30. In class we studied experssions to tables to graphs. Examples of the questions are

You have been asking for more games on the blog. Here is an opportunity to challenge yourself.
In this game you have to move the blocks (vertical blocks move only vertically and horizontal blocks move only horizontally) out of the way so that the blue block can slide out the "door" on the right. Although this game can sometimes get frustrating there is always a way out.

Being a class scribe is a serious responsibility. You need to recapture the class for that day and post it for all to see.

As Richard has said in his posts

” The purpose of a scribe is to inform the reader what your doing and by doing so you relearn what you learned that day making you just a bit more smarter. Also if the reader reads the scribe then they also relearn. To think about it. Scribing is all about learning and learning… etc.”

Some advise to bloggers. You need to be prepared to put a post up to the blog. People are counting on you to keep the scribe alive. If you are having difficulty post a blog and then go back in and edit the scribe.

To the scribes fellow classmates, If the scribe needs to have information added to it, post comments and add information you think will be helpful.

What did we do in class today?
What did we learn during these activities?
Was this new information or something I've seen in math or another class before?
Was the material difficult or easy to understand?
Is there something that I still don't understand and could ask my classmates to explain?
Did anything else happen during class that would be fun to keep a record of?
Are there any links out there to explain the concepts taight in class?

When you are the scribe you are the eyes and ears for students who were not in class. You need to summarize any notes given and show examples of the questions done as examples.

When you are done your post please pick another student to be tomorrows scribe.
Make this a fun assignment.

After grading your quizzes this weekend it is painfully obvious that most of you have not been doing what is required to learn new concepts in math. Part one of your posts this week is to send a comment to this post at your class blog sites. Answer the following questions all in one post:

1. What are the steps needed in successfully solving percent problems?

2. Copy a question you did correctly. Identify the part, whole and percent involved in the quesiton. What was your simple sentence answer. Show the math you did to solve the question successfully.

3. Copy a question you did not get full marks on. What mistakes did you make? What is a way of answering a question correctly? (Hmmm this looks like our reflection from class)

4. Take a risk and ask for help on the blog. Your classmates will respond. Ask for comments to help you and see the variety of ways to answer your questions.

5. Comment on other peoples posts giving them your solutions and support.

It takes more than one person to build a community of math learners. This blog is a way to help each other out. Take a risk and create 1 post and give helpful comments to your classmates.

Welcome back Grade 8's. This week we will be having a problem solving quiz on Percent, Proprotion, and Ration problem solving. In previous posts I have asked you to tell me the steps of problem solving. I have also given you sample problems.

Your assignment this week is to find an interesting problem on the net that deals with percentages, proportions or ratios. Place this question in your post.

In your post place a link to the site where you found your question.

All students should be using the comment options to answer each others questions. This means after you have read a persons question answer it in the comment area.

Good luck on Thursday on your problem solving quiz.

I will be the first person to do this at all of your blogs.

1. Sami decided to park her car at Park&Go for her four-day trip. The cost is usually
$8 per day or partial day. However, Sami has a 20% discount coupon for her entire
bill. How much did Sami’s parking cost?

Arrgh What am I supposed to DO!!!!!!

This seems to be a familiar refrain coming from many of you out there. Please read this.

I am very impressed with your ablility to figure out blogging. Some of you are confused about what you are supposed to do.

When you enter your blog space create a post that answers any questions that are being asked. I will post one every week. If you are the class scribe you need to tell the class what happened in class that day
-what concepts were being taught
-give examples to help explain what was going on.
-find links to sites that are helpful to your math understanding.

You can read your classes blogs and leave comments so that they can get help from you.

Remember this is a public space and an extention of the classroom. Act and write appropriately.
